getting there
Took the local train to the border of Cambodia, was definitely an experience. I couldn’t see any other tourists but the people on the train were friendly. I tried out some of the train snacks and meals. A local man even made sure I didn’t get off the train early because I almost got off a stop early! Was nice watching the scenery out the window. Then I walked across the border into Poipet.
Poipet
I only spent a few hours in Poipet before I got a van to Siem Reap. It was a very different feeling than when I was in Thailand. It was also a very hot day out, over 35 degrees! I stopped to get a cold drink and then found a ride to Siem Reap. The drivers even invited me to have lunch with them, the food was really good and it was nice to meet some friendly people right off the bat. Also it’s interesting how the vehicles change from country to country, saw lots of cool machines here.
siem reap
After a long days travel, I made it to Siem Reap. I hung out at my hostel and made some friends from Norway and England. Then met a bunch of other Canadians from BC and Alberta! Pub street is really busy, ended up getting some food with the girls and we made plans to see the temples the next day.
Had some breakfast and then we headed out to see the temples
The temples were simply beautiful, they’re so important to so many people too. Lots of them are looked after by other countries to help with the costs of the restorations. Work was still going on when we were there. I had a lot of fun with the girls and we had a really nice tuktuk driver!
Koh rong sanloem
Took an over night sleeper bus from Siem Reap to Koh Rong Sanloem. Was definitely interesting transportation, stopped off at a little place for a meal and continued on our way. Had to take a ferry to the island and met up with the Canadians I met before. We all went and got some breakfast and then headed on a boat tour.
Was a fun trip! Went snorkelling, fishing, watched the sunset and then swam with the glowing plankton. Definitely a cool experience.
Walked around the island for the day and watched the sunset. Headed off in the morning to Sihanoukville.
Sihanoukville
We just stayed here one night before we went our separate ways. We got some food and then had a wander around the city, stopped by an arcade and played some games. We went down to the beach and had some ice cream. Had some street food before calling it a night. It was a bit of an odd city, lots of almost built but abandoned concrete buildings and lots of casinos.
